Sparky,
Otty finds it easier on the bigger Quarry, can still grab a rabbit though, once he gets going its awsome to watch.
Its surprising how quickly he gets going from a standstill, but does miss a few rabbits going into cover. But if they turn on a fence line he picks them up neatly.
Got to say its abit off putting when you go to his kennel and he stands up on his back legs, hes enormous, with a bigger heart to go with it.
A gentle giant.

Deerhounds are wonderful. The ones I have met seem so gentle and kind. I've recently heard their life spans are not that long, though. I always thought they would be better off than the heavier giants, am I wrong?

I think that many deerhounds do live to double figures (just). But far too many die young. Tally's mum died at 7 years from a tumour on her spine. Her sire died recently at 10 years. His dad was 7 when he sired Tally's litter. I haven't heard whether he's still alive. (bereavement notices go into the breed club newsletters)
I'd put 7-8 at the average age too but I could be wrong. Before last year I'd decided that any year after 7 was a bonus. However after last year when it looked like I was going to loose Tally at 3 every year from now on is a bonus.
On the deerhound list you do get to read about them dying at 13-14 years but they seem to be in the US.

For NI as Mike says there is someone breeding over there as there are always ad's in the CW for them. There is also Doughty's Doxhope kennel up in Newcastle they are bred purposely for working.
Also contact the deerhound club who have a puppy list. Make sure that a puppy has been liver shunt tested btw before you buy it.

Micks deerhound looks a fine strapping male, and obviously it works, people think just because they are tall, they wont get down to rabbits, this is of course, not true. I have possessed deerhounds over the years that caught over 20 rabbits in one night, and they love it. A lot of times they bring them back to hand alive. Mind you, I much prefer to witness mine charging over the heather clad hill-sides of Scotland, where the haunting cries of curlews acho across the glen, and the sound of red grouse laughing at their own jokes sneaks out from every lech....Oh! there I go again getting a bit carried away..But seriously, he is a fine looking animal, keeping him working Mick!!!!

Otty is georgeous, I have recently acquired a deerhound and he is wonderful. Ornish is 7 months old now and went to his first show last week, the Scottish Breeds, and qualified for Crufts at his very first show! Great, as we are both learning, it is a bit different to showing a whippet. He is still to get started on rabbits, but he rather fancies pheasants!

Just out of interest my great Grand father was a farmer in Northern Ireland who kept Lurchers and Manx cats for hunting. He was a very hard man I believe. Their Kitchen rugs were made out of rabbit skins. I am a complete throw back as no one else for two generations has had any interest in animals at all but I have always been drawn towards running dogs and horses and anything to do with the countryside.
My great Grandfather married 3 times, all to Scottish women who he went and fetched from Scotland once he wore the last one out through hard work.

She's gorgeous Sprout. Big softy, cuddly thing.
Out of the puppy stage is she? Hmm. You want to see Talisman playing with my whippet pup. Tally will be 4 in May. Alan had a lot of fun yesterday when he spotted a large herd of deer in the woods opposite my house. Luckily Tally was on the lead so only Alan's arms were lengthened.
Love the photo of Darcy in the snow.

Thing is....in the Deerhound books it says they mature at three. So, last week, (6th April) I announced to Darcy that she was now officially mature and therefore, she must behave accordingly.
She listened intently...

made this face...

and then did this...

Righty ho then

She thought about it didn't she.

Decided that you were wrong life would be far too boring.
Only difference with Tally is that he's bodied up a bit.
BTW does Darcy do tiptoeing or what I think of as the stealthy walk? Tally does this when he doesn't want to be noticed. He walks very slowly and carefully. We can't of course see him when he's doing this as he's walking so stealthily so it has nothing to do with the howls of laughter that the humans are making.
Does she belch? I find myself saying to people that wasn't me that was the deerhound.
Sprout
Apr 12 2005, 02:50 PM
She does do tippytoe walking but she's not very good at it yet. She's a touch on the clumsy side so when she's trying to be delicate and not get noticed (as she clambers on top of the dryer or similar) she tends to choose that moment to crack her head on something or knock a vase over

And yes, she does belch. The greyhounds all fart merrily. Darcy rarely farts but she belches like a goodun'

Do you need any more 'typical' (for typical read ridiculous) photo evidence of our life with this deerhound masterpiece?

They look so funny don't they. Big silly things as if they could be hidden. Being sneaky sounds very familiar.
They are very goat like. People say that they aren't intelligent. Why then is it that mine tends to do what he wants to and not want I him too. Sloping off somewhere is another thing that he does, normally as I'm trying to get him to go somewhere that I want him to go and he doesn't.
I also suppose that my house is a bit off putting for non dog people (do I know any anymore

). Because no sooner have the whippets stopped battering them and licking them to death than a big hairy bony bum descends on the settee next to them. Well often if there is someone sitting at the other end the big hairy bony bum ends up on their laps.
Sprout if you give her a hug do you find that she rewards you by bring her head up sharply and smacking you a right good one on the nose with the boney skull.

Also does she like spicy foods? Tally loves chilli carrots.
Can't have too many photos of Darcy methinks.
